How to Trim your Hedges

Hedges are shrubs planted close together. Hedges are used for a number of purposes; to beautify your lawn, privacy or to boarder a certain area. Trim your garden hedges often to prevent them from overgrowing and looking bad. Follow these steps to trim your hedges and maintain a beautiful landscape.

Step 1: Put stakes in the ground in order to make a boarder cut for the trimmer. This outline will be placed at each corner of the hedge for desired shape.

Step 2: You want to tie a string to those posts in order to make the shape you want to cut. Cut of any branches that grow past that string.

Step 3: Now that the string is tied to the lower ends of the posts now you can tie a string to the top of the posts. Also cut any branches that grow past the string.

Now that you have your posts in and the strings attached you have the base outline of the shape you’re going to cut, whether it be a rectangle or square. For the pro hedge cutters even a sphere.

Step 4:  Start to trim the hedges with either shears or electric shears for a faster job, using the strings as your guide start cutting at the top of the hedge and work your way down the sides. Some spots may need to be down twice but don’t worry you will see what needs to be fixed.  Keep the top of the hedge round slightly to allow sunlight to be evenly spread out over the hedge.

Step 5: After you are finished trimming the hedge you can remove the string and stakes and take a step back to look at the great work you have done. You may want to fertilize the hedge because that amount of cutting and trimming may shock the hedge and that could lead to it dyeing. This will also help the hedge grow faster and look full and healthy.

Hedge trimming is an art of sculpting you can create whatever comes to your head. But if you need and hand that’s where Armstrong Quality Landscaping comes into play!
